Calgary Commercial Roofing Repair, Inspection, Maintenance, and Replacement. Flat Roofing and Metal Roofing Systems.

If you are planning the construction a new building, or a roof replacement of an old roof on an existing building, following are the main types of roofing systems to consider:

Single Ply

Thermoplastic Roofing and Poly Vinyl Roofing — TPO and PVC roofing systems are one of the fastest growing roofing systems. TPO and PVC are made of especially durable materials with low-temperature flexibility and a high-temperature tolerance. TPO and PVC roofing are resistant to ultraviolet, ozone and chemical exposure. TPO and PVC are typically ordered and installed as a white roof. TPO and PVC roofs have an expected a lifespan of 20+ years. They also feature a high resistance to fire, punctures, chemicals and high winds.

EPDM Roofing EPDM is also one of the faster growing materials used on residential and flat roofs. In Alberta and Saskatchewan EPDM has a great record for maintenance as it is well suited to cold and hot extremes. EPDM roofing offers superior durability and versatility, making it one of the longest lasting types of commercial roofs available. EPDM commercial roofing systems are also typically easier to maintain and repair than most other types of commercial roofs.

Torch On SBS Modified Torch on roofing has been a standard in the roofing industry for decades. It is well suited to Western Canada. Torch on is typically more expensive than newer single ply roofs and has the open-flame consideration. TPO and PVC are hand heat welded and EPDM uses adhesives. Torch on SBS requires open-flame torches and special insurance. Cold applied SBS systems are also available but not as commonly used.

BUR / Tar and Gravel Roofing Rolled tar and gravel roofs are the original flat roof system. Tar and gravel roofs consist of layers of tar and rolled tar felts covered with pea gravel. Tar and gravel roof systems are typically more costly to install than others simply due to more labor and the associated costs.

Liquid Applied Roofing There are various types of fluid or liquid applied roof coatings. Some systems that have been used for decades use a hot applied asphalt coating with polymers mixed in the asphalt. Newer systems can be found in the form of liquid rubber, asphalt emulsions, and many more.

Photovoltaic Solar Panels — As energy costs rise more and more and building owners are looking more and more toward greener and more sustainable energy many are considering and instituting solar energy roofing systems. PV solar panels absorb sunlight and convert it to energy. As the cost of solar goes down, solar panel roofs are predicted to be common place as they obviously offer to conserve energy and help control skyrocketing costs.

Green Roofs — Of all the different types of roofing available, the green roofing category has experienced the greatest surge in recent popularity. Sedum green roofs are typically covered with vegetation and soil and planted over a waterproofing membrane. Green roofing systems reduce the urban heat island effect, which is not an issue in Western Canada and therein is a primary reason their popularity is surging more in areas like Toronto or in the Southern United States. Green roofs are also found to dramatically improve a roof’s insulation value. And lastly, a green roof easily lengthens the lifespan of a roof by as much as two to three times.
