What is Roof Flashing?

Roof flashing is basically sheet of metal which is installed on the roof & near the chimney, roof valleys, skylights, wall roof intersections etc. The roof is covered with sheets of galvanized metal which is especially made rust resistant to prevent the leakage in the roof. Roof flashing is always important for the roofs to make them safe from leakage that perhaps cause due to excessive water accumulation, dirt or rust.

Roof flashing material varies in metal which is an important material and every metal has its advantages and disadvantages. Although commonly used roof flashing is galvanized sheet of metal whereas other popular choice for roof flashing is aluminum and copper. However, installing roof flashing doesn’t mean to be assure that your roof won’t leak in future unless you take proper care and maintenance of flashing installed.

Roof flashing is being installed in several type & materials on different locations of roof which has its own effect and drawback. Therefore it is important to acknowledge which kind roof flashing is ideal to safeguard roof from damaging & leakage. Classification of Roof Flashing

Chimney flashing. Chimney flashing is installed on the base of chimney to prevent leakage from sideways that may give water passage to come in. The flashing is attached where the chimney is installed on the roof sheet. Apparently, it is installed in two ways:

Cap flashing. Cap flashing is being installed at the projection of walls on the intersecting point wall and roof sheet. Generally cap flashing is overlapped on base flashing to prevent leakage of roof. An elevation is given into the wall to fix cap flashing and edges of cap flashing are strengthen by bending metal sheet from 12 mm to 20 mm.

Cap flashing is provided on slope of pitched roof and to prevent leakage it is being arranged in different steps along the slope of roof where the upper step override by lower step approx. by 15 cm. However, to safeguard roof and preventing all leakage base flashing should be inserted thoroughly into the roof to make the joints tight.

Continuous flashing. Continuous flashing is particularly done to safeguard the joints of sloped roof and its vertical wall. To avoid water leakage from vertical edges on the roof having joints continuous flashing is used.

Drip edges flashing. This type of flashing technique is installed along the edges of rakes and eaves so as to prevent water seepage through them.

Skylight flashing. Skylight flashing is installed at the base around the skylight joints while step flashing being done on the sideways to prevent leakage.

Step flashing. This kind of flashing is installed on the masonry wall meeting a slope roof. Therefore, step flashing is provided by connecting roof top and wall at right angle in order to cease leakage through roof, chimney, skylight etc.

Valley flashing. As the name suggests valley, this type of flashing is incorporated on the point where two roofs intersects while the channels on the roof are given support to keep the water drainage proper.

Vent pipe flashing. This type of flashing is installed over the chimneys and pipes on the roof.
