BuildingOnline eUpdate News OWENS CORNING ENHANCES WARRANTY ON ROOFING PRODUCTS construction

ATLANTA, GA — (PRNewswire) Owens Corning announced enhancements to the coverage for its roofing line’s Standard Limited Warranty and extended the Roofing System Advantage® Limited Warranty to increase the value for contractors and consumers and set a new marketplace standard.

Owens Corning conducted homeowner research to determine the importance of warranties to consumers. According to the survey, 65 percent of homeowners said that the warranty is a “consideration” when selecting shingles and 43 percent of homeowners said they are interested in a significantly better warranty, whether in terms of the non-prorated periods, problem resolution or transferability.

Owens Corning responded by implementing changes to the Owens Corning Standard Limited Warranty on roofing shingles and to its Roofing System Advantage® Limited Warranty effective January 1, 2001. The Owens Corning Standard Limited Warranty on roofing shingles provides the basic coverage for the failure of an Owens Corning shingle due to manufacturing defects. The optional Roofing System Advantage® Limited Warranty provides coverage in addition to the standard shingle limited warranty with added benefits and an extended non-prorated period of coverage.

“By increasing the benefits of our warranty packages, both the contractor and customer will benefit,» said Rhonda Brooks, president, Exterior Systems Business, Owens Corning. “The updated warranties will provide even stronger up-front coverage and protection for material defects, giving consumers peace-of-mind knowing that their home is protected by a high quality roofing system with superior components backed by Owens Corning, the leading manufacturer of residential roofing products. The Roofing System Advantage® Limited Warranty is the most comprehensive extended warranty in the market and provides contractors reasons to up-sell to the customer.»

Owens Corning Standard Limited Warranty on Roofing Shingles

The Owens Corning Standard Limited Warranty takes effect as soon as a roof’s shingles are installed. It covers manufacturing defects that affect shingle performance, with 100 percent coverage of the replacement costs, including labor for any defective shingles during the up-front, non-prorated Tru PROtection(TM) coverage period. After the non-prorated Tru PROtection coverage period, the warranty covers material replacement costs at a prorated rate for the duration of the warranty period.

Owens Corning’s enhanced Tru PROtection coverage, during which 100 percent of labor and material replacement costs are covered, is now three years for 20-year shingles and five years for 25, 30 and 40-year shingles. With the extended Tru PROtection coverage period, customers will receive 100 percent protection for material defects during the critical early years and up-front coverage where homeowners need it most.

Owens Corning is also increasing the transferability of the Limited Standard Shingle Warranty, with one-time transferability now available to the first subsequent purchaser of the home for a $50 transfer fee. The transferee receives the full remaining life of the warranty. This can increase the home’s resale value and is one of the simplest transfer policies in the market. To obtain the benefits of this warranty, transfers must be sent to Owens Corning within 60 days after the date of the real estate transfer.

Owens Corning Roofing System Advantage® Limited Warranty

The optional Owens Corning Roofing System Advantage® Limited Warranty is available when an entire Owens Corning roofing system is installed on roofs of single-family dwellings of 100 roofing squares or less. With an enhanced Tru PROtection coverage period, the up front non-prorated coverage including labor gives customers peace-of-mind protection. The new registration format allows for quick, easy resolution of claims.

The Roofing System Advantage® Limited Warranty offers customers greater value by the assurance of quality Owens Corning roofing components, extended non-prorated TruProtection warranty coverage and the coverage of both materials and labor during the remaining prorated life of the warranty. Owens Corning has significantly extended the Tru PROtection coverage period beyond the early coverage of the standard warranty on all 25-year products from seven to ten years. The 30-year products will continue to have ten years of TruPROtection coverage and 40-year products will continue to have fifteen years of TruPROtection coverage — the strongest protection in the industry.

After the Tru PROtection coverage period expires, normal proration applies to both material and labor coverage. The Roofing System Advantage® Limited Warranty may be transferred one time to the first subsequent purchaser of the home with a $50 transfer fee.

In addition, under the Roofing System Advantage® Limited Warranty, VentSure roof and ridge vents share the Tru PROtection coverage period of the shingle with which they are installed. After the Tru PROtection coverage period expires, the vents revert back to their original VentSure limited warranty. All other Owens Corning roof system components have the same coverage as the shingles with which they are installed for the entire Roofing System Advantage® warranty period.

To obtain the benefits of this warranty, registrations and the $50 registration fee must be sent to Owens Corning within 60 days of roofing system installation.

All other aspects of the Roofing System Advantage® Limited Warranty will remain the same and continue to provide 100 percent coverage of material and labor during the non-prorated years. The changes on both warranties provide more consistency across warranties regarding registration, transferability and transfer fees, and will also simplify the claims process. Qualified consumers can register for fast, easy claim handling by calling 1-800-ROOFING.
