Best of British Raising the standards of roofing battens

Best of British Raising the standards of roofing battens

Thank you for visiting the site to view the Best of British Campaign and the independent batten grading report.

Our intention was always to raise awareness and get the debate going.  Well we’ve certainly achieved that!  Therefore, following discussions with the NFRC and in the spirit of our relationship as an associate member, we have now removed the initial report and associated content. We have however made the latest batten results available for JB-Red. As part of our ongoing commitment to quality, we also regularly perform and publish the results of our internal batten testing which can be found on our main website.

The Best of British campaign has, as expected, raised the level of interest surrounding the subject of faulty graded battens in the UK market.  John Brash will be working closely with all parties through the NFRC, who have issued their own statement.  We have supplied details of all product audits and results of both internal and independent external test results to the NFRC to give assurance that JB-RED is both fit for purpose and complies fully with the performance requirements of BS5534:2003+A1:2010.

The Best of British campaigns sole aim is to raise the standard of roofing battens in the UK and make roofing as safe as possible for all who working within it.

This website aims to offer a platform for those wanting to work towards a solution for incorrectly graded and marked roofing battens currently in the marketplace.

Internal batten quality testing increased

John Brash has released its most recent set of audited results on the BS5534 pre-graded roof batten, JB-RED. Following on from the controversial independent batten quality report, these results demonstrate the commitment of John Brash to delivering quality battens to the roofing industry.

Until July internal audits for the BBA certified JB-RED were carried out monthly as part of the quality checking process. John Brash changed the monthly audits to form part of their daily manufacturing and quality checking processes, which ensures that their battens meet the required standards of BS5534.

The £2million manufacturing facility at the John Brash Site in Gainsborough processes over 600,000 pieces of timber used to produce the battens every month. The timber is graded by state of the art laser technology.  The facility can grade at 48 pieces per minute which equates to 24km/h or 15 miles/h.

Christian Brash, chairman comments ‘Even during economic uncertainty we have continued to invest in the right technology. This investment means we can provide the highest quality product possible. An individual can correctly grade at around 0.5km per hour or 0.3 miles/h but it’s always hard to maintain a consistent level of accuracy due to many different factors. After all we’re humans not robots! Our audit process complements the manufacturing facility and provides a good benchmark for the quality of the product.’

Latest independent batten test results are in

Following up from the initial report published on the Best of British website, a third round of independent graded batten testing has been carried out in July 2012. The standard of BS5534 graded battens is critical to safety on site and as the first report demonstrated standards were far from acceptable. This site is committed to raising the standard of graded battens in the industry and hopes to make the results available soon.

Chris Watson, managing director of John Brash comments: “In light of the shocking results of the initial testing and report we commissioned a second and third round of testing. The quality of roofing battens in the industry is so important to the safety of roofers on site that we feel strongly about performing regular consistency checks. As promised we will not publish the results of the testing until the NFRC have has chance to look into these issues independently”.

Please see the results of the independent testing on John Brash Battens, which demonstrates their commitment to delivering quality products, in the table below.
